The Red Wings have claimed their second tournament win of the year with a hard fought 4-0 win over the Vaughan Red Wings. Losers of the Pre Season tournament to VRW, the Red Wings have now deafeated the VRW in the OBHA qualifier tournament and the Playdown final.
The game seemed to lack the intesity of a 'final' as both teams have earned their birth to the Provincial Champions in August. Both these rivals wouldn't just roll over for the many in attendance. The Wings would open the scoring 4 minutes into this contest on a PPG by Frankie D'ambrosio. Denny Schlegal with add to the lead 2 minutes later. VRW seemed to take most of the play in the early part of the first but could not beat goaltender Dan Giffin. The steady play by the Wings defence would not give up anything and Schlegel and Jesse Boucher would close out the scoring for the Wings.

The semi-final matchups were played at Woodbridge Memorial Arena. The first game between the Vaughan Red Wings and Vaughan Pylons left the crowd wanting more and the teams delivered a very entertaining game.
Pylons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead only to see it evaporate early in the second. Sammy Renda would score a shorthanded goal for the VRW with just over a minute to play to take a 4-3 lead but Bobby Housser would equalize the game with 8 ticks on the clock. This game would need overtime and with just under two minutes to play the VRW were awarded a penalty shot for delay of game. Michael Polesel would not be denied and sent the VRW to the final.
In the other semi-final the Red Wings were in tough against the Peel regular season champions Brampton Young Guns. It was a see-saw battle early as these teams exchanged goals. At the half the Wings would hold a 2-1 lead. The second was a different story as the undermannded Young Guns would lose steam and the Wings power play took over scoring 2 of their 4 second period goals with the extra man. Make the final 6-2.
The final is set for The Greater Toronto Tier II provincial playdown tournament. Once again the final will pit the Vaughan Red Wings versus the Red Wings. These teams have met in the two other big Tier 2 tournaments this season. The Vaughan Red Wings won the pre season tournament and the Red Wings replied by winning the Ontario qualifier tournament. The rubber match will be played next Wednesday, July 21 9:30pm at Al Palladini. We can only hope for another entertaining game.
