HERE ARE YOUR SPRING CHAMPIONS
THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2010 12:00

Finally the Downsview Park Ball Hockey League is proud to announce the Spring League Champions. It's been a crazy few months here but these teams need to be made mention of.

TIER 3 EAST

The Bastone and Spartans HC reached the final of this 'C' Regional qualifying division. The Bastone finished tied in first place with the Hurricanes. In their semi-final matchup they faced the upstart Pirates, who showed flashes of greatest all season long. Game 1 would end in a 3-3 tie. Game 2 was a battle from the opening whistle. The game was only 2 minutes old and the Bastone had a 2-1 lead. They wouldn't look back and would win 5-2.

The Spartans HC had to battle the first place Hurricanes in their semi-final matchup. Game 1 was a wide open affair with the teams exchanging goals. The last one would come off the stick of Mike Fantin with 1:30 left in the game. It would hold up in a 3-2 win. Game 2 was much of the same with little defence. The Spartans would score 5 goals in the final 10 minutes to advance to the final with a 5-2 victory.

Would the Bastone be denied? Could the Spartans be the Cinderella story? Game 1 was a one sided affair as the Bastone crushed the Spartans 8-2. Game 2 was much closer. Maybe too close for the Bastone's liking. The final would be 2-1 Bastone and a berth in the qualifying series. Goaltender Matt Benjamin was awarded with Playoff MVP honours. Congratulations to coach Mario Ventullo and the entire Bastone team on the championship.

TIER 3 WEST

The class of this division was the Toronto Sabres finishing in first place with an 8-1-1 record and easily disposing of the Card Masters Canadians 6-2 and 5-1 in the semi-finals. Their opponent in the final would be the Jokers who eliminated the Junior Hitmen with a 4-1 win in game 2 after tying game 1.

Game 1 of the Final was much of the same as the Sabres took it to the Jokers 5-0. Game 2 was a much better effort for the Jokers but still did not have enough firepower in a 4-2 loss. The Toronto Sabres win their first Championship. Congratulations go out to coach Frank Rende, Carlos Arce Playoff MVP and the entire Toronto Sabres team.

TIER 4 EAST

Could the Toronto Stallions win back to back Championships? After running the table in the regular season with a 10-0 record they had to face the veteran squad of the Toronto Storm. Well game 1 would see an upset. The Storm end the undeafeated season for the Stallions with a 3-1 victory. The Stallions would not roll over and die and won game 2 convincingly 4-0. So overtime it was. And with only 16 seconds remaining before the shootout Anthony Tacconelli buried a wrist shot off balance to sent the Stallions into the finals.

The North York Sting, a newcomer to the league, had a up and down season never really seizing the moment. In their semi-final matchup they tied both games against the 'other' Stallions team but 4 minutes into overtime Sammy Renda would sent the Sting to the final.

These two teams became rivals very quickly this season and the final was a classic. Both games went to the wire and the Toronto Stallions prevailed with 3-2 and 5-4 wins. Anthony Tacconelli was your playoff MVP winner. Congratulations to manager Lui Caruso and the entire Toronto Stallions on back to back championships

TIER 4 WEST

This division was highly competitive with 6 points separating the top 7 teams. When all the dust settled the finals would pit the Sticky Dragons versus the Weston Knighthawks. The Dragons would dispose of the Dirty Dogz who upset the second place Barons in the quarter-finals. After tying game 1 at 2-2 the Dragons would win a close game 2 by the score of 5-3.

The Weston Knighthawks also tied game 1 of their semi-final series against Team Alive 1-1 but handed them a 7-1 pasting in game 2.

The finals was an evenly played series but the ball seemed to roll the way of the Dragon with 3-2 and 5-2 victories. Congratulations to manager Mike Martellacci and the entire Sticky Dragons team on the championship. Playoff MVP was Charlie Catalano.
